Fourteen bull riders will be in action during the Northern Bull Riding Tour when it stops at Prairie Village on Friday night.|
A Calcutta for the event begins at 6:30 p.m. and the bull riding will start at 7 p.m. A Calcutta is an event in which spectators bid on riders.
The 14 riders include Joe Bertus (Avon), Evan Brakke (Presho), Kyle Hapney (Harrold), TJ Anderson (Aberdeen), Joey Koupal (Dante), Mark Maggs (Springfield), Ryan Knutson (Toronto), Ethan Hill (Brookings), Jeff Bertus (Avon), Chris Kuemper (Delmont), Taylor Cowan (Ft. Pierre), Andrew Conghlin (Timber Lake), Jared Schaefer (Leola) and Blake Miller (Wessington Springs).
According to Prairie Village manager Stan Rauch, the bulls for the event will be from the Bierema Rodeo Company of White River.
"We will have this event rain or shine," Rauch said.
The bull riders will be going for points so that they can qualify for the finals later this year at Sioux Falls.
Each rider will get two rides during the show at Prairie Village.
According to Rauch, the total payout is $1,500. He is not aware of the breakdown.
"This is the sixth year that Prairie Village is hosting this event," Rauch said.
If the weather is nice on Friday, Rauch believes there will be a large crowd on hand. He estimates the previous bull riding events have had around 700 spectators.
"We have given away tickets to farmers and ranchers that have done business in Madison," said Kevin Jaspers of the Madison Chamber of Commerce Ag Committee. "Area businesses have helped with these tickets. It is just a nice gesture to show our appreciation to the farmers and ranchers."
Several sponsors have come together to make this event a huge success and enable to Prairie Village to host the family event.
There will be prize drawings throughout the evening, and there will be a mechanical bull on the grounds for anyone to try.
Gates will open at 4:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for ages 6-12.
