The Madison Police Department responded to a report of a vehicle-bicycle accident that occurred early Tuesday afternoon near Lakeview Tower in Madison.
The accident report indicated that Michael Allen Malone, 33, of Wentworth was driving a 2007 Lincoln Mark LT pickup east on Center St. Driving alone, Malone stopped at the street's intersection with Washington Ave. and prepared to turn at the stop sign.
As Malone started his turn, a 12-year-old female riding north on the sidewalk moved across the pedestrian crosswalk in front of the pickup. Malone's vehicle struck the rear tire of the bicycle.
The female reported receiving scratches on her leg from the accident, and the bike's rear tire rim was bent from the hit.
No damage was reported to the Lincoln, and damage to the bicycle was estimated at $100.
The reporting officer informed the bike rider and her mother that bicyclists are supposed to follow the same rules of the road as motorists.
Bicyclists are expected to obey the same traffic laws as other drivers, and they are not considered pedestrians while riding on sidewalks. Bike riders are also expected to communicate their intentions with any nearby motorists.
