The Madison Broncos claimed the Cornbelt League title with a 10-4 victory over the Salem Cubs on Tuesday night at Salem. With the win, the Broncos moved their Cornbelt League record to an impressive 15-0 with three league games remaining.
Madison got off to an extremely fast start when leadoff hitter Greg Biagi smacked a home run on the very first pitch of the game to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead. The Broncos added two more runs before the top of the first inning ended to hold a 3-0 lead.
Neither team scored until the home half of the third inning. Salem scored three times to deadlock the score at three.
The Cubs pushed one run across the plate in the bottom of the fifth to grab a 4-3 lead.
Salem's lead was shortlived. In the top of the sixth, Madison scored four runs to gain a 7-4 lead and never looked back.
The Broncos added a single run in the seventh and two more runs in the eighth frame to make the final score read 10-4.
Madison clubbed 12 hits in the contest. Three of the hits for the Broncos were home runs. Matt Burpee once again had a hot bat at the plate. He had a home run, a double, a single and two RBIs to lead the team offensively.
Biagi and Nick Bird each finished the game with a home run, a single and an RBI. Brian Miller had a double, a single and an RBI. Eric Hortness, Mitch McNary and Jon Waba each had a single. Hortness had two RBIs and Waba had one RBI.
Brock Selgestad went the distance to pick up the win. He gave up six hits, four runs, allowed nine walks and struck out nine batters.
Madison (17-2 overall) will host Dell Rapids PBR in a Cornbelt clash on Thursday at Flynn Field at 7:30 p.m. Madison downed PBR 5-1 in an earlier game this season.
The Broncos have just one more home contest after Thursday night.
