Officers with the Lake County Sheriff's Office were called to a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of SD-19 and SD-34 east of Madison at about 2:40 p.m. on Sunday.
Richard Wietgrefe, 63, of Bristol was driving north on SD-19 when his foot slipped off the brake pedal and fell onto the accelerator, causing him to drive through the stop sign at the intersection. Wietgrefe's automobile hit a vehicle driven by Annette Fraser, 39, of Sioux Falls.
Fraser was driving a white 2006 Toyota Sienna on SD-34 when her vehicle was struck by Wietgrefe's. Wietgrefe was driving a silver 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier.
Fraser, Wietgrefe and passenger Serena Fraser were transported to the Madison Community Hospital for treatment of accident-related injuries.
Wietgrefe was later transported to Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls for serious but nonlife-threatening injuries that occurred from the accident. The Frasers were treated and released.
Sheriff Tim Walburg reported that charges are pending against Wietgrefe for failing to stop at an intersection.
