Madison firefighters were called to a section of southern Farmington Township northwest of the city at midafternoon on Tuesday to extinguish a grass fire burning in a ditch.
Madison Fire Chief Randy Minnaert reported that his department received the emergency call at 3:10 p.m. and three fire trucks were sent to the scene 2 miles north and 1/2 mile west of the Prairie Village main entrance.
The firefighters found grass burning in the south ditch, used fire hoses to put out the flames and wet down the burned area.
Minnaert said that the cause of the fire had not been determined. A neighbor to the property had seen the smoke and flames and had called emergency dispatch.
No injuries were caused by the fire and the only damage was burned grass. The fields next to the fire scene were recently tilled.
Minnaert said the firefighters had returned to the fire station by 4 p.m.
