VFW dinner theater raises funds for Wounded Warrior

Community members will have an opportunity to enjoy a meal and entertainment while raising money for a good cause next month.
The two-act community production of "Strange Snow" will be presented on Feb. 8-9 at the Madison VFW. It features Dakota State University Theater Director Kelly MacLeod along with community members Ben Fox and Jared Jankord.
Doors to the VFW open at 6:15 p.m. with the show beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets are $8. Due to limited seating, reservations should be made in advance by calling the VFW at 256-6771. The show is not for children as the script contains strong language and racial slurs.
"All proceeds go to the Wounded Warrior program," MacLeod said.
The show is sponsored by the VFW. DSU faculty and students are assisting with the program.
The Wounded Warrior program is an independent project that initially provided comfort items for wounded warriors returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Since then, it has grown into a complete rehabilitative effort to assist veterans as they transition back into civilian life.
"Strange Snow" is a post-Vietnam War play written by Stephen Metcalfe. It presents the story of two veterans and how they are coping with life following the war.
The veterans -- Davy and Megs -- are portrayed by Fox and Jankord, respectively. MacLeod enters the stage as Davy's sister Martha.
"It's about how you change after war," said co-director Donna Rice, adding that the play is also about how people cope with things that happen during war and the healing that is needed afterward.
MacLeod said this show is something she has wanted to present for about 10 years.
"I finally found the right guys," she said.
A DSU graduate, Fox was an active participant in DSU productions. Jankord was involved in the most recent production of "A Christmas Carol."
The play depicts the life of these three characters during a 24-hour period in which Megs comes back into Davy's life to take him fishing. On this particular day, Megs runs into opposition from Davy, who is hung over and struggling to remember his promise to go fishing. Megs also meets Martha, a quiet and reserved school teacher.
Little by little, the audience learns more about the characters and the unresolved issues the two veterans continue to carry about a shared experience during the war.
"It's about how veterans do and do not deal with things," MacLeod said.
Those making reservations are asked to leave their contact information and the number of seats they wish to reserve. Tickets can be paid for at the door.
MacLeod said any Vietnam veterans interested in speaking about their experiences in the war are welcome to arrange a time to visit with the cast prior to the show by calling the VFW.
