Farrell, Moore submit school petitions

Officials with the Madison Central School District reported on Tuesday (today) that Tom Farrell and Charles R. Moore have submitted election petitions for seats on the Madison School Board.
The city of Madison and the school district will hold a combined election on April 9. The Madison School Board has three seats up for election this spring that are currently held by board members Tom Farrell, Ryan Hegg and Paul Weist.
Farrell currently serves as school board president. He was elected in 2010 to his first full term on the Madison School Board. Previous to the 2010 election, Farrell had served a partial term that started in November 2009.
Farrell retired in the spring of 2009 as an associate professor at Dakota State University. He had taught classes in business and information systems for 24 years.
Farrell started teaching physical education and athletics at DSU after he graduated in 1970. Farrell switched to instructing computer technology and business-centered curriculum courses in the 1980s.
All of the school board seats involved in this spring's election have three-year terms.
As of Tuesday morning, the City Finance Office reported that four men have requested petitions to gather signatures to run for the open mayor's seat: Roy Lindsay, Myron Moen, Paul Michael Weist and Dale Davis.
Mayor Gene Hexom decided earlier this winter not to run for another three-year term.
Lindsay took out a mayoral election petition last week. In 2011, he retired from an education career as an industrial arts instructor with the Madison Central School District. He also owns the Subway restaurant in Madison.
Davis, the director of the DSU Bookstore, decided last week to start gathering signatures for his petition.
Earlier last week, Weist, a DSU student, took out a petition. He is the son of Madison School Board member Paul Weist.
Moen took out an election petition from the City Finance Office at the start of the petition circulation period. Moen is credited with the creation of the South Dakota High School Basketball Hall of Fame and currently serves as its executive director.
Collecting petition signatures serves as the first step for any potential candidate to run on the April 9 ballot. Interested persons could start circulating petitions on Jan. 25, and they have a Feb. 22 deadline to turn in their completed petition forms.
The deadline for voter registration regarding the combined city-school district election is on March 25.
