The city will make a total of $3,600 available to a group of Dakota State University students, providing the latest funding from the municipal utility Round Up scholarship program.
Jennifer Eimers, city finance officer, told the city commissioners that the Round Up program would provide nine scholarships -- each amounting to $400 -- and will award them to Madison High School graduates currently attending DSU. The city will distribute the scholarships to assist the college students during the 2013 spring semester.
City officials enacted the Round Up scholarship program in January 2003. By signing up for the program, municipal utility customers agree to have their monthly bills "rounded up" to the next-highest dollar amount and then contributing the difference to the scholarship program.
As an example, a monthly bill totaling $120.40 would have its payment rounded up to $121. City officials would then transfer the additional 60 cents into a scholarship account. When it was enacted, the average contribution from each consumer was estimated at $6 peach year.
