The third annual polar plunge takes place March 23 in the parking lot of the Madison Community Center.
Registration begins at 1 p.m. with plunging commencing at 2 p.m. Participants are asked to raise a minimum of $100 to participate or a minimum of $50 if they want to enter in the "too chicken to plunge" category.
This year a special incentive is being offered to high school or college students who form a team with a minimum of 25 people. Special Olympics of South Dakota will draw the name of one member of each team for a $500 scholarship. The drawing will be held the day of the plunge.
The Polar Plunge is a fund-raiser for Special Olympics of South Dakota. Part of the funds support the state organization and part stays local to support the newly formed Madison Special Olympics team that formed this past year. So far members have participated in the state bowling competition as well as swimming and track.
Interested participants can register any time by going to www.firstgiving.com/sosd and selecting 2013 Madison Polar Plunge. From there participants can create their own fund-raising website.
