Dakota State alumni Gene and Marilyn (Nelson) Hexom are the 2013 Parade Marshals for the Trojan Days homecoming. The parade begins at 10 a.m. Saturday and travels south to north on Egan Avenue in Madison.
The parade is part of the week-long homecoming celebration at DSU.
Gene Hexom is a 1959 graduate of then-General Beadle State Teachers College with a bachelor's degree in education. He was active in music, drama, the Eastern newspaper, Trojan yearbook and Kappa Sigma Iota, and was named to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities.
Following his graduation, Hexom taught at Dell Rapids Public High School before joining East River Electric Power Cooperative in Madison, where he worked in public relations, sales/marketing and publications for 36 years. Retiring from East River in 1997, he did substitute teaching in the Madison and Rutland schools and did volunteer work for East Central Habitat for Humanity. Hexom served as the mayor of Madison from 2006-2013.
Marilyn Nelson graduated from GBSTC in 1960 with a bachelor's degree in kindergarten/primary education. She was active in music, drama and Kappa Sigma Iota, and was named to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities.
A native of Madison and graduate of Madison High School, she married Hexom in 1960.
She worked for 18 years as office manager for the East River Federal Credit Union in Madison before retiring in 1999. She served on the board of trustees for the Madison Community Hospital for 30 years and was secretary of the board for many years. She taught in the Madison school system and also did substitute teaching.
