Madison will be the host for the Region 4A VFW 13&14 A Division Baseball Tournament next week. The tournament will begin at noon on Monday and will conclude next Friday at Flynn Field. Eight teams will be vying for the top two spots in the double-elimination tournament. Teams that will be involved in the tournament are Madison 13s, Madison 14s, Dell Rapids, Gary/Canby, Kingsbury County, Castlewood, Big Stone City/Ortonville and Milbank. "There will be four games on Monday and Tuesday, three games on Wednesday, and two on Thursday," said tournament director Todd Williams. "There is one game on Friday; if the team from the losers bracket wins, then there would be an extra game on Friday." Monday's first-round pairings for the tournament are Dell Rapids vs. Gary/Canby at noon; Kingsbury County vs. Castlewood at 2:30 p.m.; Big Stone City/Ortonville vs. Milbank at 5 p.m.; and Madison 13s vs. Madison 14s at 7:15 p.m. Games on Tuesday will begin with the losers-bracket games starting at noon and 2:30 p.m. The winners-bracket games will begin at 5 and 7:15 p.m. Games on Wednesday will begin at 3:15., 5:45 and 8:15 p.m. Thursday's games will begin at 5:45 and 8:15 p.m. Friday's game will begin at 5:45 p.m.; if a second game is needed, it will begin at 8:15 p.m. Madison has two 13-year-old teams this season. According to Williams, the coaches will pick players from both teams to form one tournament team. "The top two teams will move on to the state tournament, which will be held at Humboldt the following weekend, July 27-29," Williams said. Last year, the Madison 14-year-olds won the region championship and placed third in the state tournament. "We get done with this tournament, we turn around in two weeks and host the 15&16-year-old VFW Region," Williams said. Anyone willing to volunteer to help with the tournament can call 256-0865. Assistance with concessions and tickets will be needed.
