    Hawkes first at Spirit Lake Road Race

    Emily Hawkes of Madison won the women's four-mile run at the Spirit Lake Road Race held on July 4 northwest of DeSmet.

    Hawkes was clocked in 28 minutes, 24 seconds.

    She also won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:51.

    Caleb Hawkes was a division winner in the men's four-mile race.

    Winning the men's race was Jeremy VanVeen of Aberdeen with a time of 22:31. Placing second was Steve Carlson of Erwin.

    Placing second in the women's run was Amy Twedt.

    Division winners for the women included Julie Virchow and Susan Poppen.

    Other men's division winners were Joel Poppen and Greg Gass.

    VanVeen won the men's two-mile race with a time of 11:44 with Matt Scott placing second.

    Allison VanVeen won the women's two-mile race with a time of 14:09.

    Other division winners in the men's two-mile race were Brady Wolkow, J. Poppen and Gass. Other division winners in the women's two-mile race were Autumn Wilkinson, Kelsey Poppen, Sheila Schmidt, S. Poppen and Melanie Schmidt.

    Approximately 60 runners participated in the 29th annual race.

    More than 30 runners competed in the 800-meter run. Winning the men's 800 was Jesse Kroup.

    The youngest runners were Kiera Sprang, age 4, and Seth Poppen, 3.
