    Football camp draws 47 athletes
By LARRY LEEDS, Sports Editor 07/19/2012
The timing and format of the Madison Bulldogs football camp was changed this summer.

"In the past, we would hold our own camp before attending South Dakota State University's team camp, with the hopes of installing some of our basic offensive and defensive schemes," said Madison Coach Max Hodgen.

This year, the Bulldog camp was held later in the summer (July 10-12) and Hodgen was very pleased with the results.

"Since we weren't concerned with getting our players ready for a padded team camp, I thought we were able to spend a lot more time on individual techniques and fundamentals," he said.

There was time to hold a few competitions, like the Tug Contest, which was won by Jordan Unterbrunner, as well as the Star Contest, which was won by Rush Milne.

On the last day of the camp, the players went to the Bird's Nest for some fun and food.

"It was a good change of pace and a great opportunity to do some team building," Hodgen said. "I can't thank the Hodnes enough (Bird's Nest owners). They did a great job with the meal and the organization of activities."

Forty-seven athletes attended this year's camp, "which is a positive sign considering we were missing about 10 players who were working or on family vacations," Hodgen said. "I have been preaching numbers for the past three years and we are not there yet, but I feel like it is getting better. We have some very talented ball handlers and we look great up front. I am eagerly anticipating the start of the season as we kick off fall camp on Aug. 13.

``I would like to extend a special thanks to the Avera Medical Group for sponsoring our camp this summer," he said. "I think it is very important, especially at a public school, that every student, regardless of their financial situation, gets the same opportunity to participate. It is only through sponsorships from Avera and donations from Tom and Jeff Bloom at Case IH that we as a football team are able to take care of all of our players."
