Lady Bulldogs are ready to defend state title
By LARRY LEEDS, Sports Editor 08/24/2012
The Madison Lady Bulldogs are out to defend the State "B" softball title they won a year ago. The Lady Bulldogs finished the 2011 season with a 7-8 overall record and won the championship in the varsity division.

The junior varsity team was 12-5 and placed third in the state tournament.

Madison has 16 players vying for a starting position on the varsity team. Key players who are returning to the diamond are seniors Kara Seitz, shortstop, and Tiffany Heeren, designated player; juniors Marinda Kern, first baseman, Ashley Schwebach, second baseman, Haley Hansen, outfielder, and Michaela Duff, outfielder; and sophomores Sonia Seitz, pitcher/third baseman, and Morgan Skluzacek, pitcher/outfielder.

"Our strengths will be our pitching and defensive skills," said coach Dawn Wiebers. "We will also have good leadership on the field."

The Lady Bulldogs will begin the season at Sioux Falls on Sunday. No opponents or times have been released as the schedule gets finalized.

    Wiebers' main concern is injuries.

"I would like a few more players to be out for the team in case an injury occurs," she said.

Some of the softball players compete in other fall sports for Madison High School.

Madison lost five players from the 2011 state championship team due to graduation: Dani Lemme, Bailey Milne, Ashley Currey, Chloe Nordling and Danielle Bloom.

Assisting Wiebers this year are Jerry Seitz, Gary Johnson and Deanna Siehndel.

The Lady Bulldogs will play all of their home games at the Thue Softball Complex this year.
