Dakota State University's Trojans had an opportunity to win Tuesday's game on a last-second shot by John Lamb, but the shot was blocked and DSU tied with Morningside 65-65 at the end of regulation. Lamb got his revenge immediately in overtime as he drilled a three-pointer just six seconds into the extra period. That jump-started the Trojans' offense to an 11-8 scoring advantage in OT and the Trojans downed the Mustangs 76-73 at the DSU Fieldhouse.
After Lamb's OT three-pointer, DSU stretched the lead to 76-71 when Luke Lamb drained three free-throw attempts.
The Mustangs cut the deficit to 76-73 with 55 seconds left. The Mustangs' Tanner Ferguson missed a 3-pointer as time expired.
This ended DSU's four-game home stand to start the 2012-13 season. The Trojans (3-1) recorded their fourth straight home victory over the Mustangs.
Morningside, receiving votes to the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches' Preseason poll, dropped its overall record to 2-3.
The Trojans shot a blazing 50 percent from the field (7-of-14) in the early going to gain a 16-6 lead. Morningside used a 12-4 scoring run to trim the deficit to 20-18 with 4:33 remaining before intermission. DSU closed the half with a 10-3 scoring run to gain a 30-21 lead at halftime.
With the Trojans leading 47-38 in the fourth quarter, Morningside rallied with a 16-5 run to earn its first lead of the game at 54-52.
Keith Lee II of DSU tied the game at 65-65 on a jumper with 53 seconds left in regulation.
Luke Lamb poured in 21 points for the Trojans. He was 6-for-13 from the field, including 4-for-6 from 3-point range and a perfect 5-for-5 at the free throw line.
John Lamb added 16 points with his 6-for-15 shooting from the field and 4-for-10 from 3-point range. Terrell Newton scored 15 points off the bench and had two blocked shots. Yusuf Vinson scored 13 points.
Vinson pulled down eight rebounds for DSU, Newton added seven and Luke Lamb six.
John Lamb and Newton each produced six assists. Luke and John Lamb each stole the ball three times.
Danny Rudeen scored 23 points for the Mustangs and Strand added 14. Nikkel produced 11 points and eight rebounds off the bench.
DSU are on the road Thursday, when they play Trinity Bible on Thursday at 8 p.m. in Ellendale, N.D.
