Deuel downs Lady Bulldogs in gymnastics season opener
By LARRY LEEDS, Sports Editor 11/28/2012
The Madison Lady Bulldogs opened the gymnastics season by taking on two-time defending state champion Deuel on Tuesday night at Clear Lake. The Cardinals downed the Lady Bulldogs 141.85 to 137.15 in the varsity competition.

"We were proud of the girls for their hard work at the meet; however, we know we have some work to do," said Madison Coach Maridee Dossett. "We had a tough run on the beam, with that event being a full two points lower than the bars, vault and floor. We will be dedicating some time to improving our beam routines before next week."

Leading the way for the Lady Bulldogs was Lexi Finck, who placed second in the all-around competition with a score of 35.10. Finck's best individual finish came in the vault, where she placed third with a 9.00. The senior also tied for third in both the floor exercise with an 8.85 and the beam with an 8.80. She was fourth in the bars with an 8.45.

Madison had two other gymnasts who placed in the all-around competition. Abby Christiansen placed fifth and Shannon Winthers placed sixth.

Christiansen racked up a 33.70 in the all-around competition. Christiansen's best finish came in the vault, where she was second with a 9.05. Her other finishes included fourth place on the bars with a 8.75, seventh in the floor exercise with an 8.10 and eighth on the beam with a 7.80.

Winthers' best individual finish was second place on the bars with a 9.20. She was sixth on the vault with a 8.55, eighth on the floor exercise with a 7.90 and ninth on the beam with a 7.55

Deuel's Sam Wiekamp won the all-around honors with a 38.00.

"It was nice to see a variety of our varsity girls in those top five positions. We had a great start, but will continue to push the bar higher as we roll through the season," Dossett said.

Madison will swing back into action on Tuesday hosting West Central in a dual meet starting at 6:30 p.m.
