Lady Bulldogs fall in opener

The Madison Lady Bulldogs fell behind 13-0 early against the Tri-Valley Mustangs and could not rally back on Tuesday night, losing 51-38 at Colton.
Tri-Valley held a 15-3 lead after one period. The only points for the Lady Bulldogs in that quarter came on a Madison Nipe three-pointer.
The Lady Bulldogs' offense started to warm up in the second period. Madison outscored Tri-Valley 10-7 but still trailed 22-13 at intermission.
Madison trimmed the deficit to eight, 28-20, after Morgan Skluzacek hit one free throw with 3:25 left in the period.
The Lady Bulldogs trailed by eight, 34-26, entering the final eight minutes. That was as close as the Lady Bulldogs would come for the remainder of the game.
"I thought our effort was great defensively. Offensively, we need to be stronger with the basketball, take care of the little things like passing, catching and being where we are supposed to be," said Madison coach Adam Ericsson.
Madison made 14 of 38 field goals, 36 percent (5-of-10 three-pointers, 50 percent), and 3-of-4 free throws, 75 percent. Tri-Valley made 22 of 55 field goals, 40 percent, and 4-of-6 free throws, 66 percent.
The Lady Bulldogs pulled down 20 rebounds compared to the Mustangs' 17 rebounds.
Nipe ended the game with 12 points for the Lady Bulldogs. Roz VandenBosch added eight counters and had a team-high five rebounds. Danielle Roeman came off the bench and chipped in with six points.
Allison Cross scored a game-high 23 points to pace the Mustangs. Sammy Kasowski added 12 points and snared a game-high eight rebounds.
"We played a really big, tough team well for three quarters," Ericsson said.
Madison (0-1) will host Lennox on Thursday night in a Big 8 Conference battle. The game will be played at the Madison Middle School Gym with the tipoff set for 7:45 p.m.
"I expect us to use the positives from this game to propel us into the next game against Lennox," Ericsson said.
Junior varsity drops first game
The Madison Lady Bulldogs junior varsity team came up short 36-21 against the Mustangs on Tuesday night.
Taylor Bird scored seven points for the Lady Bulldogs while Sabrina Bloom added five counters and pulled down nine rebounds. Brenna Johnson snared seven rebounds.
Freshmen drop contest
The Madison freshman girls dropped their game to Tri-Valley on Tuesday 38-17.
Emma Marsh scored six points for Madison while Mandy Engbrecht added four points, had three rebounds and four steals.
