Bulldogs open season with 69-31 win

The Madison Bulldogs used a suffocating defense and timely offense to down the Tri-Valley Mustangs 69-31 at Colton on Tuesday night. This was the first game of the season for the Bulldogs.
Madison opened up a 21-6 lead after the first quarter and never looked back in the contest.
"We worked hard on the defensive end," said Madison coach Mike Ricke. "There are some things we have to do a little better, as we fouled too much."
The Bulldogs held a 36-13 halftime lead.
Madison made 29 of 60 field goals, 48 percent, and connected on 7-of-13 free throws, 54 percent. Tri-Valley made only 8-of-41 field goals, 20 percent, but hit 15 of 20 free throws, 75 percent.
The Bulldogs dominated the Mustangs on the board 37-13.
Tyler Wiebe paced the Bulldogs with a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds. Jesse Brown added 13 points while Braxton Olson chipped in with eight counters.
Madison had 12 assists.
"We were really unselfish," Ricke said, who added that he enjoyed watching the Bulldogs on several occasions running the floor without a dribble and ending up with a layup.
Brendon Boomsma scored seven points and Logan Otto added six points for the Mustangs. Otto and Jaden Krump each pulled down three rebounds.
"Tri-Valley is a good team, but our defense took them out of their game. We have never played well here (Tri-Valley) and we made them look bad," Ricke said.
Madison (1-0) will face Lennox on Friday at the Dakota State University Fieldhouse with the tipoff set for 7:45 p.m.
JVs pick up win
The Madison junior varsity team rolled to a 62-22 win over Tri-Valley. The young Bulldogs used solid team defense and good rebounding on both ends of the floor.
Jacob Leighton tossed in 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Bulldogs. Hunter Robson and Danny Klosterman each had 11 points. Klosterman pulled down six rebounds. Bradyn Steffen snared seven rebounds.
"I was very pleased with the team's effort on both ends of the floor. The first game of the season showed us some good things from the guys, as well as some areas that we need to improve on," said coach Ross Huska.
Freshmen win
The Madison freshman team downed Tri-Valley 43-33. Mitch Hansen tossed in a game-high 13 points and Taner DenHoed added 11 counters.
"Things went pretty well for our first game. We will have to work a lot harder on defense if we want to be competitive in all of our games," said coach Mike Materese. "We did a nice job rebounding and getting the ball up the floor quickly."
