Girls Entringer Scholarship Classic is Saturday
By LARRY LEEDS, Sports Editor 12/13/2012
The 15th Annual Girls Michael J. Entringer Scholarship Classic will be held on Saturday at Flandreau. Eight games will be played during the day at the elementary and high school gyms starting at 1 p.m.

Entringer officiated football and basketball for 15 years. He began his career by volunteering to officiate junior varsity football and basketball for schools in the area around Colman.

Throughout the years, he officiated numerous high school football games in the southeast part of South Dakota, including playoff games. In addition, he worked many Class "B" and Class "A" region basketball tournament games in the area surrounding his home in Colman.

He always had goals in life and his highlight and goal was to someday ref in a state tournament, which he did in 1986 (State Football 9A Championship game) and in 1989 (State "B" Basketball Tournament).

Entringer's dedication showed at all levels that he officiated, whether it be junior high, junior varsity or the varsity. He enjoyed working with the players, coaches and fans; he was able to gain their respect year after year. Entringer continued his involvement as an avid sports fan and official until his death, Sept. 18, 1990.

For Chester's coach Ross Peterson, playing in the Entringer Scholarship Classic gives the Lady Flyers an opportunity to see other teams from the Region. "It gives us an opportunity to see other teams in our Region that we won't see during the regular season," he said. "Also there is a good mixture of Class A and B teams that have some top basketball players in the area and it is a good venue to watch those athletes play at a high level."

In Peterson's four years at Chester, the Lady Flyers have played Hamlin, Deubrook, Arlington and this year Castlewood. "Aside from adding Deubrook to our schedule this season and playing Arlington every year, we don't have any region teams on our schedule and this classic allows that to happen," Peterson said.
"We enjoy all the games we play, however, the atmosphere we experience at the Entringer Classic is really fun," said Colman-Egan coach Kristi Smith. "The Entringer family does a great job of showing hospitality towards each team and creating an environment that is exciting to play in. Also, we like how the classic brings together the surrounding communities. No matter what time you play, there is always a nice crowd."

Over the 18 years that the Entringer Scholarship has been played, a total of $486,000 in scholarships have been given out. Local scholarship recipients in 2012 included:

    Chester--Sarah Alfson, Nicole Goodale.

Colman-Egan--Dalton Hannasch, Carli Johnson, Evan Lovro.

Madison--Donald Mackenzie, Bailey Milne, Aric Olson.

    Oldham-Ramona--Garret DeRungs, Kelly Thurow.

    Rutland--Carly Carper.
