    Bulldogs race past Trojans 66-30
By LARRY LEEDS, Sports Editor 01/08/2013
Madison's Mason Sullivan goes up for two points late in the game against West Central on Monday night at the Dakota State University Fieldhouse.
The Madison Bulldogs did not show any rust on Monday night after nine days between games. The Bulldogs jumped out quickly and never looked back in posting a 66-30 win over West Central at the Dakota State University Fieldhouse. This game was a Big 8 Conference clash.

"It was nice to get back on the court after the long layoff over the holiday break," said Madison Coach Mike Ricke. "You worry about a team being rusty after having nine days between games, but I thought we really came out with a lot of energy from the start of the game."

Madison held a 15-7 lead after one period and a 34-14 lead at intermission.

"It was a nice way to come back after the layoff," said Madison senior Jesse Brown.

Madison made 23 of 72 field goals, 31 percent, and hit 18 of 32 free throws, 56 percent. West Central made 13 of 34 field goals, 24 percent, and made 3-of-13 free throws, 23 percent.

Madison held a huge advantage on the boards 60-23. Twenty-six of the Bulldogs' rebounds were offensive rebounds.

"Having 26 offensive rebounds shows that we are really being aggressive and hitting the boards hard, but it also means we are missing a lot of shots," Ricke said. "We need to improve on our shooting percentage."

Brown scored 17 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and had three blocks to pace the Bulldogs. Mason Sullivan added 14 counters while Tyler Wiebe snared nine rebounds.

"Brown had a nice game for us," Ricke said. "The 17 points were nice, but the 16 rebounds were what really impressed me. Jesse knew that he would have to pick up the rebounding slack from last year, and he has done just that."

Noah Matson had nine points and Brayden Swartwout pulled down five rebounds for the Trojans.

Madison (4-1 overall and 3-0 in Big 8 play) will go to Flandreau on Friday to face the Fliers in a non-conference battle at 7:45 p.m.

"We are going to have to be on the top of our game on Friday night," Ricke said.

    JVs pick up win

The Madison junior varsity team downed West Central 56-28. Jacob Leighton had 13 points, three assists, six steals and five rebounds to lead the Bulldogs.

Tayler Anderson added 11 points for the winners. Mack Meier, a foreign exchange student, scored two points for the Bulldogs as time expired.

"We got after West Central pretty good, limiting them to only one shot on many possessions and picking up a number of steals that led to easy scoring opportunities," Coach Ross Huska said.

    Freshmen add win

Madison's freshmen downed West Central 42-31. Braydon Gilbert tossed in a team-high 20 points. Taner DenHoed added eight points. Rounding out the scoring were Brodie Frederiksen and Hunter Streff with four points each and Matt Palli, Hunter Jamison and Tyler Hare each with two points.

"We played pretty hard, but we were really rusty from not playing in a couple of weeks," said Coach Mike Materese.
