Tigers outlast Bulldogs, win wrestling meet

The Huron Tigers hung on to down the Madison Bulldogs 38-26 in non-conference wrestling at the Madison Middle School Gym on Thursday night.
"As a coaching staff we are pleased with our effort against Huron," said Madison coach Chris Waba. "Huron really has a lot of fire-power with nine ranked wrestlers in its lineup."
The Tigers jumped out to a 9-0 lead after two matches.
Kaiden Dorris got the Bulldogs on the scoreboard when he earned a technical fall over Ryan Chase 15-0.
Huron added a pin and a technical fall to go up 20-5.
A forfeit win and a pin pulled the Bulldogs to within three, 20-17. Brendon Waldner had the forfeit win.
Wyatt Fender pinned Nick Christensen in the 145-pound match in 47 seconds to pull Madison within striking distance.
"Wyatt looked very good again," Waba said. "It is fun to watch him wrestle when his confidence is soaring and right now he is on a roll."
The Tigers reeled off four decisions to grab a 32-17 lead. In one of the premier matches of the night, Matt Goth of Madison squared off against Hartman Katz. Both wrestlers are highly ranked in the 152-pound class. Katz won the match 6-3.
"This was the first time I wrestled him," Goth said. "He is the toughest wrestler I have faced this season. This gives me the confidence that I can wrestle with anyone."
Corey Welbon stopped the Tigers' run of victories at 195. He pinned Jeremiah Johnson in 2:55 and pulled the Bulldogs to within nine, 32-23, with two matches left.
"Corey again gave us an opportunity to be in the dual," Waba said. "This young man is wrestling with a lot of aggressiveness and is very tough to beat right now."
The Bulldogs split the remaining matches. Ayson Jones defeated Josh Waagen 9-4 in the 285-pound match.
Madison will swing back into action on Saturday as the Bulldogs will participate in the Harrisburg Invitational starting at 9 a.m.
JVs get eight wins
Madison's junior varsity team picked up eight wins against the Tigers. Getting pins for the young Bulldogs were Derek Bierschbach, Colin Johnson, Tyler Guthmiller, Brandon VanRosendale, Donny Price, Dexter Nowstrup and Braxton Steffen.
Johnson also had a major decision.
"We did a very good job against one of the tougher teams in the state," said Coach Al Bierschbach. "Young eighth-graders Bierschbach, Price and Steffen all got pins. Experienced kids like Johnson, Guthmiller, VanRosendale and Nowstrup did a great job of winning matches that they were supposed to win."
The younger kids will travel to Huron on Saturday for the Huron Middle School Tournament and the older JV wrestlers have off until next Friday night as Madison will host Madison Square Garden Night.
