The Madison Bulldogs picked up a pair of wins over the weekend.
The Bulldogs topped the West Lyon (Iowa) Wildcats 53-38 at the Dakota Schoolers Classic at the Elmen Center on the campus of Augustana College.
West Lyon held a 14-12 lead after one period, but it was all Bulldogs after the first quarter. Madison outscored West Lyon 19-4 in the second quarter to gain a 31-18 halftime lead and never looked back.
Tyler Wiebe had a double-double for the Bulldogs with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Trae VandeBerg added nine counters and Mason Sullivan chipped in with eight points for the Bulldogs. Jesse Brown pulled down 10 rebounds.
"It was fun playing a team that we don't normally get to play against," said Madison Coach Michael Ricke. "We were able to get some film on them, but we still went in the game with a lot of unknowns. I was pleased with how quickly the guys adjusted."
Cody Bauman scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds to pace West Lyon.
The Bulldogs made 21 of 50 field goals, 42 percent, and hit 9-of-17 free throws, 52 percent. West Lyon made 13 of 45 field goals, 28 percent, and 9-of-23 free throws, 39 percent.
Madison outrebounded the Wildcats 40-30.
Madison (6-1) will swing back into action on Tuesday as part of a boys' and girls' doubleheader at the Flandreau Indian School. The boys' game is set to tip off at 8 p.m.
Bulldogs down Fliers at buzzer
Sullivan went coast-to-coast and hit the winning shot as the buzzer sounded and the Bulldogs slipped past the Flandreau Fliers 54-53.
"Mason went the length of the floor in 6.9 seconds and banked in a 7-footer as the time expired," said Ricke. "It was a clutch play by Mason."
Madison held a comfortable lead throughout much of the game -- until the fourth quarter. The Fliers outscored Madison 21-11 and grabbed the lead with 6.9 seconds left in the game.
"We really played well at times in this game. We were able to extend the lead to as many as 14 points in the third period and had opportunities to extend the lead even higher, but didn't convert," Ricke said.
Madison made 22 of 51 field goals, 43 percent, and hit 4-of-6 free throws, 66 percent. Flandreau made 16 of 43 field goals, 37 percent, and 14 of 14 free throws, 100 percent.
Madison held the advantage on the boards 29-21.
Brown scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Bulldogs. Sullivan ended the game with 10 points. Wiebe grabbed seven rebounds.
Mitchell Foster scored 16 points for Flandreau and Jacob Patterson added 11 counters. David Parsley grabbed seven rebounds.
