Madison crushes Quarriers 63-45 for seventh win

The Madison Bulldogs used a strong second half to pick up their seventh win of the season at the Dakota State Fieldhouse on Thursday night. Their victim was the Dell Rapids Quarriers. Madison downed the Quarriers 63-45 in front of a packed house.
Behind balanced scoring, the Bulldogs grabbed an early 20-9 after one period. Braxton Olson and Preston Nordling, both coming off the bench, each scored five points late in the period to give Madison the lead.
"Preston and I are supposed to come off the bench and be a sparkplug," Olson said.
Dell Rapids outscored Madison 20-11 in the second period but trailed at halftime 31-29.
"We got out to a great start and were able to build a nice lead," said Madison Coach Michael Ricke. "Dell Rapids is a good team and we knew that they would make a run. They did in the second quarter. We were able to withstand their run and still get to halftime with the lead on Braxton's 3-pointer in the second quarter."
The Bulldogs' offense began to pick up in the third quarter and the defense clamped down on the Quarriers. Madison outscored Dell Rapids 22-8 in the third period and held a 53-37 lead entering the final eight minutes.
"I think we really wore them down in the second half," Ricke said. "Our constant defensive pressure eventually took its toll and we were able to pull away."
Madison made 27 of 62 field goals, 43 percent, and hit 4-of-10 free throws, 40 percent. Dell Rapids made 16 of 40 field goals, 40 percent, and 11 of 18 free throws, 61 percent.
The Bulldogs held the edge on the boards 39-23.
Olson and Trae VandeBerg each scored 12 points to pace the Bulldogs. VandeBerg pulled down eight rebounds.
Jesse Brown added 11 counters for the winners. Tyler Wiebe grabbed seven rebounds and Mason Sullivan dished out four assists.
"I was extremely pleased with the play of our bench. I thought they gave us a lot of energy and were a huge part of this win," Ricke said.
Cole Langer scored 14 points and pulled down eight rebounds for the Quarriers. Bryce Koch also had eight rebounds.
"This was a great win for us. I thought the kids played with focus and intensity all night. I thought we did a really good job of executing on both ends of the floor," Ricke said.
"Dell Rapids is a good team and it was nice to beat them," Olson said.
Madison (7-1) will go to Hayti on Monday night to face the Hamlin Chargers in a non-conference battle with the tipoff set for 7:45 p.m.
JVs pick up win
Madison downed the Quarriers 52-36 in the junior varsity game Thursday.
Jacob Leighton scored 15 points to pace Madison. He also had three assists, three steals and four rebounds.
Carter Kasuske added 13 points while Hunter Robson tallied 10 counters for the winners. Robson also had five steals and eight rebounds.
"This was a big win for us against a very good Dell Rapids team. Our defense once again set the tone of the game early, as we forced Dells into a number of turnovers that we were able to convert into easy layups," said Coach Ross Huska.
Freshmen add lopsided win
The Madison freshmen rolled past Dell Rapids 47-16. Brodie Frederiksen scored 11 points for the Bulldogs. Braydon Gilbert added nine points for Madison.
"This was probably our best overall game of the year. Offensively, we had 10 of our 11 dressed players get into the scoring column; defensively, we held Dells to only 16 points. It doesn't get much better than that," said Coach Mike Materese.
