Longtime Dakota State University employee Steve Bartel has been involved with DSU athletics in a variety of duties for many years. For his time and effort, Bartel will receive the Terry Ryan Distinguished Service Award.
Bartel will receive his award during halftime of the DSU-Jamestown men's basketball game at the DSU Fieldhouse on Saturday night.
Bartel, a 1978 DSU graduate, began working at the college in 1981. For the past 31 years, he has been working with the Student Services staff involved in student activities and residence life. One of his duties includes the accommodations for preseason camps and the individual housing needs of DSU student athletes.
Throughout the years, Bartel has volunteered to work at the scoring table in a variety of capacities, most recently managing the official scorebook. In addition, he officiated at youth tournaments and worked in concessions.
Bartel has contributed to the Alan Ende Memorial Scholarship for track/cross country athletes since its inception in the late 1980s.
He asked the DSU softball coach to allow him to throw batting practice for the women's team periodically since 1976. Bartel also served as the assistant DSU volleyball coach in the late 1980s and early '90s.
He and his wife Terri live in Madison and have three children, Jeremy (Megan), Justin (Billie) and Kristen, and a grandchild Rilynn.
