SFC wins battle of highly-ranked teams

The Madison boys' basketball team suffered its first home loss of the season to highly-touted Sioux Falls Christian before a packed house at the Dakota State Fieldhouse on Monday night.
SFC fought back from an early deficit to down the Bulldogs 62-45.
Behind the play of Braxton Olson, Madison's Bulldogs grabbed the early advantage and held an 11-9 lead with 2:41 left in the first period. Olson scored six of the 11 points.
The Chargers deadlocked the score at 11-11 with 2:21 left in the quarter.
Madison went on a 7-0 run, which included a buzzer-beater by Rush Milne to put Bulldogs on top 18-11 after one period.
The Bulldogs stretched their lead to 20-11 early in the second period when Jesse Brown hit for two.
SFC outscored the Bulldogs 13-7 in the remaining seven minutes to pull to within three, 27-24, at intermission.
"We really played well for the majority of the first half," said Madison Coach Michael Ricke. "I thought we came out with a lot of energy, enthusiasm and focus and really did a good job of executing our game plan."
However, Ricke thought the momentum of game started to turn in favor of SFC late in the second quarter.
Back-to-back three-pointers put the Chargers on top 30-27 early in the third period, and the Chargers would never relinquish the lead for the remainder of the contest.
SFC built the lead to 32-27, before Madison would score in the third period. With 4:56 left in the period, Brown hit Madison's first field goal of the third period.
SFC closed the quarter with a 15-7 spurt and held a 47-36 lead heading into the final eight minutes.
"SFC came out in a zone to start the second half, and we really struggled to make shots against it. On the other end, the Chargers heated up from the outside," Ricke said. "They shot 66 percent (14 of 21) from the field in the second half and we only shot 28 percent (8-of-29). That is the difference in the ball game."
For the game, Madison made 19 of 57 field goals, 33 percent, and hit 4-of-7 free throws, 57 percent. SFC made 23 of 42 field goals, 54 percent, and connected on 9-of-14 free throws, 64 percent.
Madison held the edge on the boards 28-25.
Jacob Giles scored 13 points to pace the Bulldogs. Olson and Trae VandeBerg each added eight counters. VandeBerg pulled down eight rebounds while Mason Sullivan had five assists.
Jordan Baker tossed in a game-high 20 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the Chargers. Nick Stern had 13 points and Cody VanHolland chipped in with 11 counters.
"SFC is a phenomenal team," Ricke said. "They are solid at every position and never get rattled. They just flat out beat us."
Madison will swing back into action on Thursday when the Bulldogs go to Hartford to face West Central at 8 p.m. This is the makeup game from last Thursday.
JVs win overtime contest
Madison downed the Chargers 52-46 in overtime in the junior varsity game on Monday night.
Madison made 11 of 31 (2-point shots) for 35 percent and 3-of-15 (3-pointers) for 20 percent. Madison connected on 21 of 28 free throws for 75 percent.
Carter Kasuske tossed in 17 points, grabbed five rebounds and had three steals to pace the Bulldogs.
Jacob Leighton had 12 points and three steals, while Tayler Anderson added 11 counters, six rebounds and three steals for the winners.
Freshmen drop game
SFC rolled to a 65-49 win in the freshman game on Monday night.
"We played them pretty tough in the first half," said Madison Coach Mike Materese. "We had way too many turnovers in the third quarter and let that game get away from us."
Taner DenHoed scored 13 points and Tanner Burg added 12 points for the Bulldogs. Brodie Frederiksen chipped in with nine counters.
