Nipe hits game-winning shot for Lady Bulldogs; Madison nips Milbank 46-44

Madison Nipe drained a three-pointer with 56 seconds remaining in the game to give the Lady Bulldogs their first lead of the second half 46-44. The defense did not allow Milbank to score in the final minute, and Madison picked up its fifth win of the season at the Madison Middle School Gym on Tuesday night.
The Lady Bulldogs rallied from a 16-point deficit in the fourth period. That rally was spearheaded by Nipe and Michaela Duff. Nipe finished off an old-fashioned three-point play with 6:11 left in the game to bring the Lady Bulldogs to within 10, 38-28, bringing the crowd to their feet. The home crowd did not have much to cheer about in the second half until Nipe hit a layup and was fouled on the play.
After a field goal by Milbank, Duff dialed up long-distance and drained a three-pointer with 4:45 left in the game and Madison trailed by nine points, 40-31.
Milbank went on a 4-1 scoring spurt and held a 44-32 lead. A field goal by Danielle Roemen and another old-fashioned three-point play by Nipe pulled the Lady Bulldogs to within seven, 44-37, with 2:11 on the clock.
The Lady Bulldogs knocked down three of four free throws and closed the gap to four, 44-40, with 1:32 left. Ten seconds later, Duff once again dialed up long-distance and hit her second three-pointer of the quarter to pull the Lady Bulldogs to within one, 44-43, setting up Nipe's game-winning shot moments later.
Nipe scored 10 fourth-quarter points while Duff added eight points in the final stanza. Milbank hit a shot but it was waved off as it was too late.
"The three-point shots were good shots," Duff said. (She also hit two key free throws down the stretch.) "We shoot them every day in practice, but I was nervous."
Madison jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game. Milbank stormed back and outscored Madison 16-2 to close the quarter and held a 16-9 first-quarter lead.
Milbank stretched its lead to 28-13 at intermission.
"Coach Ericsson told us to keep hustling, believing, and trust one another and we can win this game," Duff said.
Madison made 13 of 52 field goals, 25 percent, and made 16 of 24 free throws, 66 percent. Milbank made 15 of 42 field goals, 35 percent, and made 14 of 18 free throws, 77 percent.
Madison held the edge on the boards 30-24.
Nipe ended the game with 12 points to pace the Lady Bulldogs while Duff chipped in 11 points. Roz VandenBosch and Marinda Kern each pulled down eight rebounds while Danielle Roemen dished out five assists for Madison.
Cori Redmond scored 16 points for Milbank while McKenzie Mertens added 11 counters. Abbie Snaza pulled down nine rebounds for Milbank.
"This win should help us a lot, and this should help our confidence," Duff said.
Madison (5-11) will swing back into action on Friday, when the Lady Bulldogs go to Volga to battle the Sioux Valley Cossacks. It is part of a girls'/boys' doubleheader with tipoff set for 6:30 p.m.
