Olson surpasses 1,000 points in her career

Oldham-Ramona-Rutland senior BreeAna Olson recently became the first female athlete in O-R-R Lady Raider history (in the current co-op) to surpass 1,000 career points. She reached that milestone during a game against Centerville late last month.
As she was closing in on 1,000 points, it was one of Olson's goals to reach the milestone.
"I knew I was close, but when I reached that plateau I was surprised and shocked," Olson said.
Olson describes her role on the basketball team as a scorer, but is more -- she is an all-around team player as she finds the open player on her drives into the lane.
Olson's teammates mean everything to her.
"I would never trade any of my teammates," she said.
Olson has been on the Lady Raider varsity team for four years and has been a starter for three years. She has averaged 17 points, six steals, five rebounds and four assists per game during her three years as a starter.
Olson holds the school records for most steals in a season (93), most points scored in a game (34) and most career steals (292). She already has more than 1,000 points with two regular-season games left.
"BreeAna's natural ability to lead has made her a great basketball player," O-R-R Coach Sara Holmberg said. "She works extremely hard to constantly get better in order to help her teammates and coaches be as successful as possible."
Olson inspires the younger girls to work harder, play smarter, and she makes everyone she plays with better, according Holmberg.
"She opens up a lot of options for herself and her teammates because of her ability to get to the basket," said Holmberg. "She is a great passer and takes care of the ball well."
The only thing Olson is missing from her resume is a trip to the state basketball tournament.
"It is a dream of mine to get to the state tournament," she said.
Olson and her teammates have been close for several years but have fallen just one game short of advancing to the state tournament.
"BreeAna has been an integral part in the success of the O-R-R girls' program the past couple of years," said Holmberg. "Her speed and ability to anticipate are what sets her apart from many of her competitors. More importantly, she is a strong, smart, unselfish, hard-working and dedicated teammate."
Another Lady Raider went over the 1,000-point plateau in her career. Bonnie Thurow finished with 1,183 career points. Her statistics were part of the Oldham-Ramona co-op (2 years) and O-R-R co-op (2 years).
"I could not have done this without the support of my family, friends and teammates. I feel extremely blessed to share this accomplishment with so many people who have helped me to attain my goal," Olson said.
Basketball is Olson's favorite sport and she will play for Dakota State University next season. One of her most memorable baskets happened during her freshman year at the Swiftel Classic against the Hamlin Chargers. She drained a half-court shot at the final buzzer to beat the Chargers.
Some of her accolades during her career include being a two-time member of the Dakota Valley Conference first team All-Conference team, Brookings All-Register team, District 4B championship player of the game (sophomore) and Most Valuable Player (sophomore and junior).
She is the daughter of Reggie and DaNeil Olson of Nunda.
