Bulldogs tame C-Hawks and Cossacks

The Madison Bulldogs opened up an early 30-13 advantage after one period and never looked back, posting an 84-70 win over the Canton C-Hawks on Saturday at the Dakota State University Fieldhouse.
"The first quarter was our best offensive quarter of the season," Madison Coach Mike Ricke said. "We scored 30 points, and eight different players scored in the quarter. We really did a good job of running the floor and making the extra pass. It was fun to watch them put everything together and have a quarter like that."
Madison stretched its lead to 19 (49-30) at intermission.
Canton crept back into the game in the fourth period as the C-Hawks outscored Madison 29-14.
"By the fourth quarter, you could see that playing three games in three days was starting to take its toll. We started to lose our defensive aggressiveness and positioning," said Ricke. "As a result, we allowed Canton to score a lot of points in that quarter, which made the final margin look a lot closer than the game actually was."
Madison made 31 of 58 field goals, 53 percent, and hit 13 of 24 free throws, 54 percent. Canton made 26 of 69 field goals, 37 percent, and made 13 of 16 free throws, 81 percent.
"We had 26 assists on our 31 baskets," Ricke said. "That shows how well we were moving the ball and how unselfish the guys were playing."
Madison held the edge on the boards 40-30.
Jacob Giles tossed in 13 points to lead Madison. Rush Milne added 12 counters and Eli Roemen chipped in with 10 points. Tyler Wiebe snared a game-high 14 rebounds. Preston Nordling has six assists while Roemen and Braxton Olson each had four assists.
Cody Willett poured in 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for Canton. Anders Peterson added 16 counters and Jay Lems chipped in with 10 points.
Bulldogs get past Sioux Valley
Sioux Valley held a 10-6 lead after one period but the Bulldogs rallied back to gain a 56-43 win over the Cossacks on Friday night at Volga.
"This is a quality win for our team," Ricke said. "Sioux Valley is always a tough opponent. They are well coached and always do a good job of trying to control the tempo of the game. I thought our guys did a good job of staying patient and not trying to force the issue," Ricke said.
Madison outscored Sioux Valley 22-7 in the second period and held a 28-17 lead at intermission.
The Bulldogs made 18 of 54 field goals, 33 percent, and hit 15 of 24 free throws, 62 percent. Sioux Valley made 14 of 37 field goals, 37 percent, and 11 of 19 free throws, 57 percent.
Madison dominated on the board 40-20.
"Once again, we dominated on the boards, outrebounding Sioux Valley by 20 including 16 offensive rebounds," Ricke said. "Rebounding has been a strength of this team all year long and will be a huge asset for us as we get into the postseason."
Wiebe scored 13 points and snared 12 rebounds to pace the Bulldogs. Olson added nine counters. Trae VandeBerg pulled down nine rebounds while Giles had five assists.
Tayt Vincent scored 12 points for the Cossacks. Tyler Toft pulled down eight rebounds.
Madison will hit the road on Thursday night. The Bulldogs will go to Vermillion for the last Big 8 Conference game for Madison. With a win over the Tanagers, the Bulldogs will secure the Big 8 title alone. Tipoff is set for 7:45 p.m.
JVs add 2 wins
The Madison junior varsity team picked up two wins over the weekend, downing Canton 58-37 on Saturday and Sioux Valley 56-47 on Friday night.
Tayler Anderson had 10 points and seven rebounds to lead the Bulldogs to the win over Canton. Jordan Unterbrunner had nine points. Heith Williams had seven points, four steals and four rebounds while Jacob Leighton added seven points and three assists.
Anderson had 14 points, four assists, three steals and six rebounds against Sioux Valley.
Leighton had 14 points, three assists, four steals and seven rebounds. Unterbrunner had nine rebounds.
Freshmen chalk up two wins
The Madison freshman basketball team added wins over Canton 63-36 and Sioux Valley 44-40.
Tanner Burg scored 15 points in the win over Canton. Mitch Hansen and Brodie Fredriksen each had nine points.
Burg dumped in 13 points against Sioux Valley. Fredriksen and Hansen each had seven points against Sioux Valley.
