The Madison Lady Bulldogs will be looking to get back to the top of the Class A gymnastics this weekend at Rapid City. All 12 Class A teams will be competing for the team championship on Friday. The teams include Madison, Britton-Hecla, Chamberlain, Deuel, Hot Springs, Milbank, Sisseton, Stanley County, Vermillion, Wagner, Wall/Kadoka and West Central. Deuel is the defending State A champion. Individual and all-around competitors will qualify during the team competition on Friday, and will be added to the list of those who qualified during the season. Gymnasts had the chance to qualify during the season by scoring an 8.5 or better in one of the individual events at three different meets during the season. To qualify during the season in the all-around competition, a gymnast must meet or better the standard of 31.00 at three meets during the season. "This will put a lot more pressure on gymnasts during the team-day on Friday to qualify for Saturday," said Madison coach Maridee Dossett. Six of these Madison gymnasts will be competing on team-day for the Lady Bulldogs. Lexi Finck, Tayler Herold, Ashley Schwebach, Abby Christiansen, Laurel Appelwick, Kenzie Jorgenson, Maegan Champion, Jenni Giles or Shania Schwebach. According to Dossett, the six will be picked after warmups on Friday. Finck the lone senior competing for the Lady Bulldogs at the State Meet, is hoping the team will do the best they can. "This will be an emotional and bittersweet moment for me," she said. For Madison to win the championship, the Lady Bulldogs must stick the beam routines, according to Dossett. "We have to stay focused and if something goes wrong for one person the next one has to pick it up," Dossett said. "We have that ability to pick up one another." Dossett believes that Deuel will be the team to beat as the Cardinals have been scoring in the 140s all season long. Other teams that could challenge are Britton-Hecla and Milbank. "It is an honor to have qualified for the all-around," Finck said. Being the only senior that will be competing, Finck offers this tip to her younger teammates. "Shake off the bad event and do good in the next one. Deuel boast the individual champion in the vault and uneven bars, Sam Wiekamp; and the balance beam, floor exercise and all-around winner Meaghan Sievers. There will be 107 gymnasts competing in Class "A" over the two-day state meet.
