    Madison wins battle of Bulldogs
By LARRY LEEDS, Sports Editor 02/19/2013
The Madison Bulldogs closed out their 2012-13 regular season with a 72-51 victory over the Milbank Bulldogs on Monday afternoon at Milbank.

Madison grabbed the early lead 21-9 after one period and never looked back.

"This was a great way to wrap up our regular season," said Madison Coach Mike Ricke. "This might have been our best four-quarter game of the season offensively. We had consistent scoring in each quarter and stayed away from the `bad quarter' that has seemed to plague us this season."

Madison made 32 of 50 field goals, 64 percent, and hit 5-of-8 free throws, 62 percent. Milbank made 15 of 35 field goals, 42 percent, and 17 of 20 free throws, 85 percent.

"We shot our highest percentage of the season from the field, and we were above 50 percent in every quarter," Ricke said. "I thought we took good shots in the flow of the offense, and our transition game was on point. Everyone seemed to be on the same page."

Madison held the advantage on the boards 20-18.

Mason Sullivan scored at least four points in every quarter and ended the game with a career-high 22 points on 10 of 12 shooting.

Jesse Brown added 14 points while Trae VandeBerg tossed in 11 counters. Braxton Olson chipped in with 10 points for Madison.

Tyler Wiebe pulled down six rebounds and Jacob Giles had six assists.

Ben Forrette scored 19 points to pace Milbank, while Andy Buchele added 15 points and five rebounds.

Madison (18-2 overall) will begin postseason play on Tuesday with a home game against the Flandreau Indian School at the Madison Middle School Gym. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.

    JV closes season with win

The Madison junior varsity team closed the season with a 54-20 win over Milbank.

Carter Kasuske tossed in 11 points to pace the winners. Tayler Anderson and Jordan Unterbrunner each added nine counters while Danny Klosterman chipped in with seven points.

Anderson and Klosterman each had four rebounds. Jacob Leighton had six assists and five steals.

    Freshmen win finale

Madison won the freshman game 43-27. Mitch Hansen poured in 16 points for the winners. Brady Balogh and Taner DenHoed each had seven points. Brayden Gilbert had five counters.

Rounding out the scoring were Tanner Burg with four and Brodie Frederiksen and Tyler Hare each with two points.

The freshmen ended the season with a 15-3 overall record.

"We really improved as the season progressed," said Coach Mike Materese. "I really enjoyed working with these student athletes over the last 3 1/2 months."
