Green sets lofty goals for State Powerlifting Meet here Saturday
By LARRY LEEDS, Sports Editor 03/05/2013
Matt Green is one Madison Bulldog who will be competing in the South Dakota State Powerlifting Meet in the Madison High School auditorium on Saturday. Action will begin at 9 a.m.

Green, a junior at MHS, will be competing in the 132-pound class.

He became interested in powerlifting while take a weightlifting class with Tom Milne.

"He suggested I should try it," Green said.

In competition on Saturday, all lifters will be doing three lifts: deadlift, bench press and squat.

"I like the squat best," Green said. "It just seems to be the easiest."

Green has some lofty goals for the state competition. He is hoping to get a 195-pound bench press, a 407.5-pound squat and a 405-pound deadlift. In an earlier meet this year, Green had a 175-pound bench press, a 335-pound squat and a 385-deadlift and placed first in the 132-pound division.

Green believes the techniques he has learned from Milne and his peers have helped him in lifting the weights. If he reaches his goals, they would be all personal bests.

All lifters get three tries at each lift.

"The first lift is one that you know you can get, the second lift is a maximum and the third is out of your comfort zone," Green said.

Besides powerlifting, Green is a member of the golf and tennis teams. He believes that lifting helps in both sports.

"It helps my long game in golf, and it gives me the endurance and gives me a harder swing in tennis," he said.

According to Green, powerlifting is more of a team sport than what people see.

"The support given by your teammates is great," he said, adding that he is very appreciative of the support shown by his parents.

One of the benefits Green believes that weightlifting gives is stress relief.

"It is a great stress reliever after a day of tension, and it helps you to keep in shape," he said.

Green will be looking for his first state title on Saturday.

Other Madison lifters are Gabriel Richards, Justin Tucek, Andrew Wilgar, Trevor Holbrook, Moritz Bollacher, Brendon Waldner, Brandon Burg, Logan Jager, Johnny Monroe, Brodie Fredriksen, Jakob Poppens, Lucas Zingmark, Trevor Hoadley-Jager, Lane Booth, Jackson Jones, Brandon VanRosendale, Dylan Williams, Sean Nielsen, Jacob Callahan, Ayson Jones, Riley Leighton and Tyler DenHoed. Girls on the team include Rosie Chapin, Lexi Finck, Tiffany Heeren, Jenna Meyer, Leslie Terwilliger, Haley Hansen, Brooklyn Hodges, Tayler Herold, Ashley Briggs and Tiana Paradeis.

Admission for the event is $5 per adult and $3 per student for the whole day. There will be a concessions stand available.
