Trojans drop home opener to Morningside

After playing the first 28 games on the road or at neutral sites, Dakota State University played its first home game of the season against Morningside on Monday. The home field advantage did not help the Trojans as the Mustangs downed DSU 9-2 in nine innings.|
Neither team scored until the third inning. Morningside's AJ Staiert ripped an RBI to plate the first run. Tanner O'Neill added an RBI double and Keaton Rowe smacked an RBI single to put the Mustangs on top 3-0.
The Trojans scored once in the third when Kyle Holland smacked an RBI double.
The Mustangs scored three more runs in the fourth frame to go up 6-1. Adison Gillett hit an RBI single for the Mustangs.
DSU scored once in the fifth on an error and trailed 6-2. Rays Roman had a double and the Trojans left bases loaded to end the inning.
Morningside closed out the scoring with two runs in the sixth and one run in the eighth.
Rays Roman and Holland each had a double for the Trojans. Anyelo Roman, Kevin Madera and Kyle Braun each added a single.
Britt Anderson was 2-for-3 at the plate with two singles and three RBIS for Morningside. Staiert had a double and a single.
Morningside outhit DSU 12-5.
Josh Caven (1-2) suffered the loss for DSU. He started the game and tossed three innings. Caven allowed three runs on five hits. Seth Rockafellow pitched the fourth inning and gave up three runs on one hit. Austin Weber worked four innings in relief and allowed three runs (one unearned) on four hits. Jamie Jorgenson pitched the ninth inning and allowed two hits.
Morningside used three pitchers and each went three innings. Derek Appley picked up the win; he gave up one run on two hits. John Russell limited DSU to one hit. Lance Spongberg struck out five batters in the last three innings of work.
Mayville tops DSU
Mayville State rallied from a 4-3 deficit to grab an 8-4 win over DSU on Sunday in Lennox in an Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) conference game.
Mayville scored four runs in the eighth to break a 4-4 tie and grab the win. The Comets had three hits and the Trojans committed two errors in the frame.
In the first inning, DSU's Anyelo Roman smacked a double to knock in Rays Roman.
The Comets tied the score in the second when John Pistulka hit a solo home run.
The Trojans regained the lead in the third with two runs. Ryan Bourcier had an RBI single.
Mayville answered in the fifth inning with two runs on a double by Sam Thielen.
DSU scored once in the sixth frame to regain the lead 4-3. Kyle Braun doubled to drive in Chaz Palmer.
Mayville scored once in the seventh and four times in the eighth.
Anyelo Roman had two hits for the Trojans. Rays Roman, Danny Flahie, Bourcier, Kevin Madera and Braun each added a hit.
Dillon Lundin went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and a single for the Comets.
The Comets outhit the Trojans 8-7.
Madera started the game for the Trojans. He pitched six innings and allowed three runs on four hits. He struck out five MSU batters. Drew Sweeter pitched the seventh inning and gave up one unearned run on one hit. Anyelo Roman (1-3) suffered the loss as he worked the eighth inning; he allowed four unearned runs on three hits.
Victor Sokolofsky (6-0) picked up the win as he tossed a one-hitter in two innings. Gavin Biegler, Pistulka and Spencer Kidder were on the mound for the Comets.
DSU (8-21) is scheduled to play Morningside in Sioux City, Iowa, on Thursday at 3 p.m.
