Local drivers dual with the best

The racing action started on Wednesday at Huset's Speedway when the World of Outlaws STP Series paid a visit to the famed 3/8th-mile track near Brandon.|
The largest crowd ever to see a race at Huset's Speedway was there to witness the action and see NASCAR driver Tony Stewart battle with the World of Outlaws and the area's best sprint car drivers.
Two area drivers were competing in the sprint car class: Madison's Chuck McGillivray and Ramona's Ryan Bickett. Bickett was competing with the World of Outlaws for the first time.
In his initial race, the first heat race of the night, Bickett had to go up against two of the best World of Outlaw drivers, Sammy Swindell and Steve Kinser.
"I wanted to race with them before they retired," Bickett said. Bickett wanted to get more seat time in his 410 Outlaw sprinter.
He finished seventh in his heat race.
McGillivray, a Huset's Hall of Famer, placed seventh in his heat race.
The two local drivers went to the 12-lap "B" Feature as they tried to make it to the 35-lap "A" Feature.
Neither driver placed in the top four of the "B" Feature to move on to the "A" Feature. Bickett, who started ninth, moved up two spots to place seventh. McGillivray started and ended in 11th place.
Overall, Bickett thought that his first battle with the World of Outlaws went well.
"In the time trials, I shaved some time off of what I do on Sunday nights, and I did not get lapped by anyone," he said. "I was really happy."
In the 35-lap "A" Feature, Tim Kaeding jumped out to an early lead before a red flag stopped the action and bunched up the cars again. On the restart, Stewart was able to get the lead and led for much of the race before spinning out and handing the lead back to Kaeding.
Kaeding was able to get the lead on the restart and held on for the win. Stewart placed 14th in the race.
The Huset's Speedway street stocks were on hand that night and Madison's Matt Steuerwald had his #3 street stock there. He placed sixth in his heat race after being in fourth for most of the race.
In the 15-lap "A" Feature, Steuerwald started 16th in the 19-car lineup. He moved up eight places to finish eight in the race.
Huset's will have a regular program on Sunday starting at 7:30 p.m.
Dakota State Fair Speedway
Dakota State Fair Speedway had special Fourth of July races and one area driver was slinging mud at the track. Madison's Doug VanLiere was competing in the Wissota Super Stock division.
VanLiere placed third in the "A" Feature; earlier in the night, he was second in his heat race.
The next scheduled race for DSFS is July 13.
