Talented team returns to golf course for Madison
By LARRY LEEDS, Sports Editor
Joey Liesinger begins his sixth year as the Madison High School boys' golf coach and has a veteran squad returning to the links.|
Top returnees to the Bulldog lineup include seniors Tayler Anderson, Trae Vandenberg and Brandon Burg along with sophomore Hunter Jamison.
All of these golfers competed in the State A Tournament last fall. Anderson tied for 13th place in the state tournament and has been selected the most valuable golfer for the Bulldogs the past two seasons.
Other golfers vying for a spot on the 2013 team are junior Jordan Kisor; sophomores Tanner Burg, Lucas Geditz, Justin Tucek and Dylan Zingmark; and freshman Bryce Eimers.
"We have great senior leadership this season; that and the friendship between team members are two strengths of the team," Liesinger said. "They understand the game and they encourage everyone."
Liesinger believes another strength with this team is that they know what club they need and the strategy of the game.
"They play target golf and know the time to hit an iron."
Liesinger's main concern is how well the underclassmen will play.
"We can't go anywhere without them," he said.
Liesinger believes the kids have put in their time over the summer. "They have played golf throughout the summer along with other activities," he said. "They are well-rounded citizens with great manners."
The Bulldogs won the final Big 8 championship last season. This year the Bulldogs will be playing in the newly-formed Dakota XII Conference.
"Playing in the Dakota XII Conference will be more fun and challenging," Liesinger said. "It will be a better test as you will have 12 of the best teams playing on the same day, at the same location, with the same weather conditions. It will be more difficult but more exciting, and there will be more prestige."
Madison will play seven matches before school starts. The Bulldogs start a busy week of golf on Monday when they go to Hartford for the West Central Invitational. They will also play at Hartford the following day, at Dakota Dunes on Wednesday and at Milbank next Thursday before having a couple of days off.
"We need to play before school starts so we don't miss any school," Liesinger said.
Madison's first home meet is a triangular with Tri-Valley and West Central on Sept. 12.
Liesinger tabs Dell Rapids as the team to beat in a very tough region meet at Aberdeen.
Following is the Bulldogs' schedule:
Aug. 19: at West Central Invitational (Hartford), Aug. 20: at West Central Triangular (Hartford), Aug. 21: at Dakota Valley Invitational (Dakota Dunes), Aug. 22: at Milbank Invitational, Aug. 26: at Dell Rapids Invitational, Aug. 29: at Sioux Falls Christian Invitational (Bakker Crossing), Sept. 3: at Harrisburg Invitational, (Spring Creek), Sept. 6: at Brookings Quadrangular, Sept. 10 at Harrisburg Triangular, (Spring Creek), Sept. 12: Madison Triangular (Madison Country Club), Sept. 16: Madison Invitational (Madison Country Club), Sept. 19: Madison dual with Sioux Falls Roosevelt (Madison Country Club), Sept. 23: Dakota XII Conference Meet (TBA), Sept. 30: Region 1A Tournament (Aberdeen), Oct. 7-8: State A Golf Tournament at Hartford.
