The Madison Bulldogs jumped out to a 21-0 first-quarter lead and never looked back, posting their seventh win of the season 46-13 over the Lennox Orioles at Lennox on Friday night.|
Just like the Bulldogs have done all season, they struck early and often. With 9:27 left in the opening period, Jacob Giles tossed a 21-yard scoring strike to Preston Nordling. The extra-point conversion failed but the Bulldogs held a quick 6-0 lead. The scoring drive covered 41 yards in three plays.
Rush Milne was the next Bulldog to get into the end zone. With 6:42 left in the opening period, Milne plunged into the end zone from three yards out. Giles ran the two-point conversion and Madison was up 14-0. Milne capped off an 11-yard drive in three plays.
Nordling scored his second touchdown of the quarter just over two minutes later. He scampered 42 yards to paydirt with 4:54 left in the period; with extra-point kick by Brayden Gilbert, the Bulldogs held a 21-0 lead. The scoring drive was a one-play drive.
"We started fast again on Friday night with a few quick three and outs, great kickoffs and 21 points from our offense in the first quarter," said Madison Coach Max Hodgen. "There was a strong wind out of the west, and we elected to defend the west end zone and kick off in both halves, relying on our defense to give us good field position."
Both teams scored once in the second period. Lennox got on the board with a Dereck DeVries 13-yard run with 9:54 left in the half. Collin McEntee booted the extra point as the Orioles pulled to within 14, 21-7. The scoring drive for the Orioles went 80 yards in 14 plays.
Madison answered the Orioles' scoring drive with one of its own. The Bulldogs marched 87 yards in 15 plays. Capping off the scoring drive was Milne with a one-yard plunge with 2:54 left in the half. The conversion failed but the Bulldogs enjoyed a 27-7 lead.
Milne scored his third touchdown with 7:17 left in the third period. Milne capped off a 75-yard, six-play drive to put the Bulldogs on top 33-7.
Giles capped off a 34-yard, two-play scoring drive with 4:32 left in the third quarter. Giles sprinted 20 yards to paydirt for the Bulldogs. With the extra-point kick by Gilbert, the Bulldogs enjoyed a 40-7 lead.
Both teams scored once in the final period. With 10:17 left in the game, John Oldenkamp scored on a 38-yard run. The conversion failed and the Orioles trailed 40-13. The Orioles' scoring drive covered 79 yards in five plays.
Mitch Hansen closed out the scoring for the Bulldogs. He capped off a 14-play, 73-yard drive with a one-yard plunge with 4:36 left in the game to put the Bulldogs on top 46-13.
"Lennox has a solid younger class and was able to give us a few problems running the option at us, but in the end, I think our experience and athleticism was too much for them," Hodgen said. "Our younger players saw valuable minutes in the second half, and I was pleased with their execution and effort."
Madison had 401 total yards, 257 rushing and 144 passing. Milne ended the game with 78 yards on 14 carries. Hansen added 63 yards on eight attempts.
Giles was 8-of-14 passing for 143 yards while Hansen was 1-for-1 passing for one yard.
