The Lake County Sheriff's Department responded to a vehicle-horse accident which occurred early last week west of Madison that killed the animal and left a pickup with major damage.
A deputy sheriff reported that John Kelley, 44, of Madison was driving alone east on US-81 at about 7:15 p.m. on Nov. 19 in a 2011 Dodge Ram 1500.
Kelley told authorities that he was driving at 65 mph when he approached the highway's intersection with 450th Ave., located a couple of miles east of Junius. At the intersection, the four-wheel-drive pickup collided with a horse that entered the roadway.
The deputy found the horse dead at the scene. Damage to the Dodge pickup was estimated at $18,000.
Kelley did not seek medical attention at the accident scene.
The sheriff's office reported that the horse was owned by Fred Janke of Madison. Its value was estimated at $1,500.
