Madison residents using the city's solid-waste collection service will find their garbage pick-up a bit more expensive starting this winter.
The Madison City Commission approved a 75-cent increase in monthly collection charges for all of the city's customers. The commissioners approved the resolution that instituted the higher rates after hearing its second reading on Monday night.
In discussion before the vote, Mayor Gene Hexom said that he had not received any comments from the public about the utility-fee increase.
The new rates for customers using the city's 65-gallon garbage carts will increase to $13.75 per month. The charges for persons using a 95-gallon city garbage cart will increase to $17 per month.
For customers who use two 30-gallon cans to dispose their garbage, the monthly bill will also rise to $17 per month.
The new charges will appear on city utility bills that arrive this December and are payable in January.
New police cruiser
The city commissioners also approved the purchase of a 2012 all-wheel-drive utility interceptor for the Madison Police Department, using the price provided through the state-bid process.
The state-bid system offers an AWD patrol vehicle to law enforcement at a base cost of $25,528.
Police Chief Chuck Pulford received an offer from the Prostrollo Auto Plaza in Madison that equaled the state bid.
The police department also requested one option, also offered on the state bid, with the base vehicle -- a post-mounted spotlight costing $415.
