Regents to consider DSU/SJU agreement

Dakota State University will present a new cooperative agreement to the Board of Regents' Committee on Academic and Student Affairs next week.
The Board of Regents will meet at Black Hills State University in Spearfish beginning Tuesday with closed session meetings set for Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning. The board's open meeting begins Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.; committee meetings begin at 3:30 p.m. and the meeting concludes Thursday morning.
DSU's cooperative agreement is one of four up for consideration by the Committee on Academic and Student Affairs. DSU's agreement sets the foundation for future activity with Shanghai Jianqiao University (SJU).
International Programs Coordinator Jacy Fry said this is a new agreement for DSU that is the result of a trip to China in April.
According to Fry, DSU has had a cooperative agreement for many years with East China Normal University, but in seeking to update that agreement, DSU officials found that their point of contact was no longer with the university and began to investigate the possibility of setting up a new agreement with a different university.
"We met with a bunch of different universities and discussed many different opportunities we could provide for faculty and students," Fry said, indicating that the cooperative agreement is the first step in continuing to explore new options with SJU in China.
"We hope it opens study abroad opportunities for students and faculty, research opportunities and guest lecturing or instruction opportunities," Fry said.
SJU is also interested in DSU's English as a Second Language program.
Through the process of meeting with universities in China, Fry said, DSU officials looked at campuses with programs similar to those offered at DSU.
"SJU has a digital arts and design program," Fry said. "Maybe our students can go there and take digital arts classes or students there could come here."
DSU officials who visited China this spring were Fry, Wayne Pauli and Lynn Ryan.
This will be DSU's third agreement with an international university. DSU has existing agreements with Tamagawa University in Japan and the Arab Academy for Science and Technology and Maritime Transport in Alexandria, Egypt.
