Madison School Board to act on early retirements

The agenda for the Monday night meeting of the Madison School Board will include having the board members approve the early retirement requests of four staff members.
As part of the personnel actions, the board members will consider accepting the early retirements of Mike Materese, Crystal Benning, Doug Sims and Jill Stearns.
The Madison School Board will meet at 6:30 p.m. in the lunchroom at Madison High School.
The school board will consider approving April 9 as the date of the Madison Central School District's next school board election. Three seats on the school board, currently held by Tom Farrell, Ryan Hegg and Paul Weist, have their terms expire this year. Any candidates in the 2013 election will run for three-year terms.
By choosing April 9 as an election date, the school district will have the opportunity to combine its election with a city election that would select Madison's new mayor. Mayor Gene Hexom has announced that he will not seek another term.
Persons interested in running for a school board seat can start circulating election petitions on Jan. 25. The deadline for filing election petitions is at the end of the business day on Feb. 22.
If approved, the city and school district would hold the election at the downtown City Armory from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The board members will consider changes to five school district policies. The changes include removing the district's policy for not scheduling activities on Wednesday night. They will also consider eliminating a policy that extended courtesy to citizens committees, such as nongovernmental organizations, that is extended to other groups.
The school board will consider revisions to a policy that awarded honorary high school diplomas to certain honorably-discharged military veterans from the World War II and Korean War eras.
Another proposed change would remove the 29 cents per mile reimbursement for transporting elementary students who do not receive school bus service to a reimbursement rate set by the board.
The fifth revision was proposed concerning supervision of the district's summer band program.
The board members will hear reports from Brian Wright, the supervisor of the district's school cafeteria program, and Rob Honomichl, the technology director.
They will also receive an update on renovation work at MHS and consider declaring some property as surplus.
