Three Sunday accidents occur in Madison

The Madison Police Department reported that slippery street surfaces contributed to three Sunday accidents that occurred in the downtown area.
At about 10:15 a.m., a two-vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of N.E. 2nd St. and N. Washington Ave. as Theodore Pekarek, 89, of Madison was driving west on N.E. 2nd St. Pekarek was driving alone in a 2001 Buick LeSabre when he came to the intersection with N. Washington Ave.
A 17-year-old Madison driver was eastbound on N.E. 2nd St. at the intersection, driving alone at about 25 mph in a 2004 Gran Prix.
Pekarek judged that he had the room to make a left turn and prepared to drive across the oncoming lanes. However, the Gran Prix was too close and its driver was unable to brake due to a slippery street surface.
After Pekarek hit the Gran Prix, the Pontiac drove into a lamppost on the southeast corner of the intersection.
Damage to the Buick was estimated at $1,000, and damage to the Pontiac was estimated at $3,500.
A second two-vehicle accident occurred at about 3:50 p.m. at the intersection of N.W. 3rd St. and Blanche Ave.
Ethan Quam, 22, of Madison was driving alone northbound on Blanche Ave. in a 2001 Jeep when he came to the intersection.
At the same time, Lucas Sursely, 31, of Madison was driving with a passenger westbound on N.W. 3rd St. in a 1999 Honda Accord.
The vehicles met at the intersection and both drivers attempted to brake, but they were unable to stop due to a slippery street surface.
Damage to the Jeep was estimated at $200, and damage to the Honda was estimated at $900.
A third accident occurred at about 4:35 p.m. at the N.E. 2nd St. and N. Washington Ave. intersection.
April Magnuson, 20, of Rapid City was driving west on N.E. 2nd St. in a 2004 Chevrolet Impala.
Glenn Vandenbosch, 77, of Madison was attempting to turn left onto N. Washington Ave. at the intersection driving alone in a 1995 Buick Park Avenue.
From information in the accident report, Magnuson turned in front of Vandenbosch and the vehicles collided.
Damages to the Chevrolet were estimated at $2,400, and damages to the Buick were estimated at $3,500.
