A Court of Honor ceremony will take place on Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. for Brendon Waldner of Madison, who will receive the Boy Scouts' Eagle rank.
To earn the rank of Eagle, a scout must earn a total of 22 merit badges, 12 of which are specifically required. The scout is also required to organize and complete a leadership project, which is commonly referred to as an Eagle Scout project.
Waldner's project involved designing and building three obstacle course items for Woofland Park on N. West Ave.
"I researched the size and what to do and visited with Ted (LaFleur) about ideas," Waldner said.
Waldner had six obstacles from which to choose. Together he and LaFleur, from the city Parks Department, settled on three items -- a ramp built over a tunnel, a tire hanging on a chain, and weaving poles.
The city provided the cement culvert for the tunnel and contributed a tire. Waldner said both were larger than anticipated. While a smaller tire was found, Waldner said, they adjusted the size of the ramp and platform on top to fit over the culvert.
One of the leadership project requirements is to lead a group of volunteers in the creation of the items. Waldner's team included Lucas Zingmark and Dexter Nowstrup. Parent volunteer Paul Hansen helped with the power tools.
Waldner has been a member of Troop 5 since middle school and has enjoyed the many trips along the way -- especially to Hawaii. That trip involved boogie boarding, sailing and a visit to Pearl Harbor.
