Seven show interest in county commission seat
By ELISA SAND, Staff Reporter 02/01/2013
Lake County residents interested in a partial term on the County Commission have until 5 p.m. on Monday to submit their letters of interest.

Lake County Auditor Bobbi Janke said her office has received seven letters from individuals interested in the position.

At the commission's last meeting, County Commissioner Chris Giles was asked to consider taking the position of state's attorney. Current State's Attorney Ken Meyer announced his resignation in December, which takes effect March 4. Giles previously served as Lake County state's attorney and was considered a viable candidate.

Both Meyer and Giles recently started new four-year terms. By state law, if a vacancy occurs, an appointment can be made by the county commission until the next election, which would be in 2014.

Giles accepted the appointment and announced he would step down as county commissioner effective March 3. His appointment as state's attorney takes effect March 4.

Giles will sit as state's attorney until Jan. 5, 2015. The candidate chosen to fill the county commission seat will serve until that time.

Two-year terms for state's attorney and county commissioner will be up for election in 2014 to fill the remaining two years of both terms.

County commissioners plan to review the letters of interest at Tuesday's meeting and determine the next course of action.
