DSU student lands Google internship

When Alec Nilson submitted his application for a summer internship at Google last October, he never imagined that application would send him to Ireland. But that is exactly what happened.
Nilson is from Omaha, Neb., and is a junior at Dakota State University double majoring in computer system security and network administration. He is eager to start his international Google internship on May 7.
"Google has been a company where I wanted to work for a long time. I have a couple of connections within Google, and they helped me to apply overseas," Nilson said.
Initially, he applied for a United States-based internship at Google, but with the help of an acquaintance who already worked for Google, Nilson's application was sent in for the open overseas internship position. He was then contacted for an interview. After four interviews, he was informed he had been accepted for the internship in Ireland.
"When I first found out I landed the internship with Google, I wasn't sure what to think. It's a big thing!" Nilson said.
Nilson appreciates DSU's open campus community which encourages him to succeed.
"The fact that I can simply go to my academic adviser and ask what I can learn next, and then be given a topic to focus on so I can expand my knowledge base, makes a huge change in how a person can learn," Nilson said. "Also, with DSU professors encouraging me and because of the self-confidence I've gained because of DSU, I decided to apply for the Google internship."
Nilson's duties will focus on desktop and end-user support during his Google internship.
"I've had other internships before with small to medium-sized networks, but this opportunity will help me see how a worldwide, huge corporation like Google operates with such a large network," said Nilson.
According to Google.com, the company has more than 70 offices in 40 countries. Most are equipped with fitness facilities, cafes with free healthy food options, and other on-site services to ensure Google employees are happy and healthy. The company explains that no two Google offices are the same, but there are a few common features in each office, like murals and decorations expressing local personality; Googlers sharing cubes, yurts and "huddles;" and video games, pool tables and pianos.
