Lake County authorized a motion to seek grant funds for a potential recreation trail on the east side of Lake Madison.
The trail, which carries a preliminary estimate of $360,000, would start near Lakeview Realty and extend to The Lakes Golf Course. The trail includes a bridge that costs about $130,000.
State's Attorney Chris Giles said a grant program that could cover 80 percent of the cost is available, but county commissioners have to submit an application by May 1. Commissioners agreed to do so Wednesday in a special session.
Giles said District 8 Sen. Russell Olson spoke to commissioners on Wednesday about the grant program. He also indicated that it's possible the cost of the project could be reduced if a previously used bridge was obtained for the project.
Giles said the First District of Local Governments is assisting with the grant application and several details still need to be worked out before the project can move forward. No project timeline has been determined.
