Jane Utecht joined the staff of the Madison Daily Leader on Monday as a reporter. Utecht will do general assignment reporting, including covering county government, area schools and other news, as well as feature stories.
Married with three children, Utecht attended Iowa State University and recently received her master's degree in journalism from South Dakota State University. She has 25 years of experience in journalism and for 8 1/2 years was editor of the Volga Tribune.
A native of Hawarden, Iowa, she said a love for writing prompted her to go into journalism, with her favorite stories being features.
"I think features about people get to the soul of a community," she said.
Utecht said that a good writer should be able to find the heart of a story and present it in a way that makes it easy to understand.
"News stories should inform and also entertain," she said. "I look forward to meeting the people of Madison and telling their stories."
Utecht is also an accomplished singer and pianist and has taught piano for 23 years. The couple plans to move to Madison in the near future.
