The community bloodmobile will be accepting donations at the Madison Community Hospital (west parking lot) on Aug. 13-14 from 7-10:30 a.m. and again from 12-2:30 p.m.
Donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. They should eat a good meal before donating blood and should avoid energy drinks. Donors cannot have a cold, sore throat or fever.
A person can safely donate blood every 56 days. Donors must provide identification at the time of donation (blood donor card works).
There is a constant need for blood to be used for cancer, surgery, trauma and burn patients. To help ensure that blood supply, at least 500 units of blood are needed each week. Patients use 100 units of blood an average each day in this area. One donation can help three people.
Elective surgeries may have to be postponed if there is not an ample supply of blood.
Donating blood takes just 25-30 minutes. Those who donate will receive a coupon for a pint of ice cream from Dairy Queen.
Walk-ins are welcome. To schedule an appointment, call Elva at 256-6811.
