At about 8 p.m. on Wednesday, the lights went out in a large part of Lake County and beyond.
Carrie Law, with Sioux Valley Energy, said the outage calls began coming in about 8 p.m. from the areas of Colman, Egan, Rutland, Wentworth, Ward, Lakeview Township and part of Madison. In total, about 2,400 customers were without power, she said.
The area affected is served by the Flandreau WAPA station. The majority of the Sioux Valley customers were back on at about 9:30 p.m., and the last 1,000 customers in Lakeview and Madison were back on by 10 p.m., Law said.
Tess Nelson with the Madison Electric Department said city customers affected were in the southeast portion of town, along with the grain substation. The grain substation was back online rather quickly, but some city residents were out of power until 3 or 4 a.m. she said. The cause, as of presstime, was still unknown, said Nelson.
