Troy Wermers is the new owner of Pure Air, an air duct and furnace cleaning business.
Troy Wermers of Madison made an important decision recently.
"I decided at my age it would be a good opportunity," he said of his choice to own his own business. Wermers bought Pure Air from a friend and is going to give it a try to "be my own boss."
Instead of working around furniture, as he's done for the past 17 years at Montgomery's Furniture, Wermers will now be working with the air around furniture in people's homes. Pure Air cleans air ducts and cold air returns, as well as dryer vents, blower motors on furnaces.
"There is a call for it," he said. "They say the air outside your house is cleaner than the air inside."
He also knows people are concerned about their air quality with dander, germs and pollens that bother sinuses.
The Pure Air brochure lists sobering statistics: "The average six-room house collects 40 pounds of dust a year...Air ducts have more germs than a chicken coop."
Dust, dander and other contaminants can also be hard on homeowners' heating and cooling systems. Less than a half an inch of dirt can result in a 21 percent decrease in efficiency.
Although Wermers knows there will be challenges with a new business, he is looking forward to the freedom of "being my own boss" and is hoping for enough business to stay afloat.
Wermers thinks he's starting the venture at a good time.
"Now through the winter and spring will be the prime time" for the air duct work, he said. He's got a few jobs already and by Oct. 1 will be in business "full swing."
Wermers will provide service in Lake County and the surrounding counties, and can be reached at 605-270-3329.
