Lake County Sheriff Tim Walburg reported that his department responded to a one-vehicle accident during the early-morning hours on Sunday.
At about 2:30 a.m., the Sheriff's Office and Madison Police Department responded to a report of a vehicle in the ditch at the intersection of S. Division Ave. and SD-34.
The officers found that Stacey Berg, 22, of Madison was traveling east on SD-34 when the vehicle entered the median and struck a delineator post. Berg's vehicle swerved and he over-corrected, entering the south ditch along SD-34.
Walburg said Berg was cited for reckless driving and DUI. The damage to the vehicle was estimated at $1,500.
Walburg has also warned motorists that large numbers of slow-moving farm equipment will operate on the county's roadways during the coming weeks with farmers using the roads to travel from field to field. He cautions drivers to make a greater effort in watching for other vehicles on the road.
Drivers unfamiliar with farm equipment should understand that the machinery typically operates at less than 20 mph on the highway. Automobiles driving at highway speed limits and following combines and tractors will close the distance between the vehicles in an incredibly short period of time.
