People are ready to launch the Christmas shopping season this week, and we'd love to see a bunch of that shopping take place in Madison.
The Daily Leader published a special section last week called Santa Shops Madison, and dozens of Madison businesses participated, many of them offering specials for the upcoming days.
The section was also distributed through newspapers in nearby towns to encourage shoppers to visit our city between now and Christmas.
If you misplaced that section, we still have a limited number available at our offices, so please stop in.
There is a real economic boost to our city this time of year. Some retailers book a significant part of their entire year's sales after Thanksgiving, allowing them to employ seasonal employees, fix up their stores and purchase inventory for the coming year.
And let's not forget the sales tax collected in Madison goes to worthwhile causes, like helping rebuild streets and supporting our parks and recreation programs. We'd rather see the sales tax we pay support our community than the programs of Sioux Falls or other cities.
This could be a great shopping season for us all if we choose to help Santa shop in Madison.
